Kollu- Health benefits

Kollu or Horse gram is a legume which has lot of health benefits.It is full of vitamins and proteins. It have been traditionally had during winters to keep the body warm and to cure cold. It is the best to have in your diet if you are trying to loss weight.

Kollu Sundal

Kollu or Horse gram is had in many ways as Kollu Sundal, Rasam/ Soup, Thuvayal etc. My Mom in law makes thuvayal with sprouted horse gram which tastes great with a spoon of sesame oil on hot rice. Will try to post it soon.

How did I make Kollu Rasam

The first step to make this rasam is to soak the horse gram overnight. Cook it and drain the water. We are going to use that cooked water to make this rasam. You can use that horse gram to make other dishes.The drained water along with spices and tamarind extract is cooked to make this rasam. Having this on a cold day along with hot rice is a heaven. INGREDIENTS

Kollu / Horse gram – 1/4 cup

Tomato – 1 medium sized chopped

Tamarind – 1 small lemon sized

Jeera – 1/2 tsp

Black pepper corns – 1/2 tsp

Garlic – 2 pods

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida – a generous pinch

Oil – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – few

Cilantro – few

Salt – as required

METHOD

  • Soak horse gram overnight.
  • Wash and cook with 2 cups of water. Strain the water and reserve.
  • Soak 1/2 lemon sized tamarind in 1/2 cup water.
  • Pulse jeera, black pepper and garlic pods coarsely.
  • Take a pan and heat oil.
  • Crackle mustard seeds.
  • Add the ground spices and saute’ for a minute.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, curry leaves and saute’ till it’s mushy.
  • Add the reserved horse gram cooked water and tamarind extract.
  • Add asafoetida and required salt.
  • When it starts boil add cilantro and switch off.
  • Serve warm with hot rice.

  1. Adjust black pepper as per your requirement.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 Cup Horse gram
