Ellu podi / Black sesame seeds powder

South Indian cuisine has lots of spice powders or podi varieties on its menu. I already posted our favorite Parupu podi. Here I am with another healthy spice powder which you can enjoy over just hot rice with sesame oil or ghee. You will need a few fryums as a side.

A bowl of heaped Ellu podi.
A condiment that can be used for Idli or dosa.

When I saw this recipe on my friend Vidya’s website I wanted to try it for a long time. Just did and want to thank her for this awesome recipe. I made this ellu podi with no oil but you can add 1 teaspoon of oil while roasting the lentils.

Health Benefits of Black Sesame Seeds

There are two types of sesame seeds, White and black.

  • The white ones are the hulled ones whereas the black ones are with the skin.
  • The white sesame seeds are used as toppings over the salads and stir-fries.
  •  The black sesame seeds are used to make cold-pressed sesame oil, spice powders, Tahini, and so on.

The sesame seeds are rich in antioxidants, a good source of Vitamin B may help reduce inflammation, and more. Considering the health benefits of black sesame seeds, it’s recommended to include them in the daily diet.

Ingredients Used to make Ellu podi

Black sesame seeds – Black sesame seeds are the ones with the skin. You can also use white sesame seeds for this recipe. The only difference will be the color of the spice powder.

Urad dal – Urad dal is rich in protein which gives a nice flavor to this spice powder.

Chana dal – Chana dal or split chickpeas is used in various Indian foods from stir-fries to kootu to fritters. We also use it for our ellu podi.

Asafoetida – This is an important ingredient to include in the foods whenever we use lentils which helps in digestion and bloating.

Method

As I said, I have used no oil in this recipe starting with dry roasting ingredients separately. Dry roast urad dal till it turns golden. Remove it to a plate. Then dry roast chana dal till golden and add the red chilies to it and roast it for a few seconds.

At last dry roast, the sesame seeds till you hear a crackling sound. Remove it to a plate and let it cool completely. Then grind it smoothly along with asafoetida and required salt in a mixer grinder. I like it a little coarse. Serve with Idli or dosa.
