Indian buttermilk

Indian buttermilk is a popular summer drink with several variations and preferences. Each household all over the nation has its own version of buttermilk recipe. Buttermilk is a fermented drink packed with nutrients, probiotics, and vitamins. If I have to list out the benefits of buttermilk:

  • It’s an excellent drink to keep you hydrated.
  • It aids your digestion.
  • It boosts bone health.
  • It helps in reducing the blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • As it is a low calorie drink, it helps in reducing weight.

In this post, I give the version I like to make for my family.

Two glasses of Indian spiced buttermilk with gooseberry.

How to make Indian spiced buttermilk

Ingredients used

Method

I have used gooseberries, ginger, cumin powder, curry leaves, and black salt along with homemade curd or yogurt. We take all the ingredients in a blender and blend it till smooth. Add a cup of water and strain it in a bowl. Add one more cup of water to dilute. Adjust the salt as per your preference. Serve chilled.

Black salt is optional. If you do not have black salt, then just use table salt. If using black salt, then just use a pinch, not more than that for the given measurement. (I have used both black salt and normal table salt)

Note: Straining the buttermilk is optional but we like it that way in our family.

Variations you can try
1. You can add chopped green chilies after straining the buttermilk and set aside to chill in the refrigerator before serving.

2. You can also add a few mint leaves and cilantro while blending the yogurt.

3. Instead of gooseberries, you can add cucumber to make cucumber buttermilk.

Need more summer drinks

Pomegranate mocktail

Aam Panna

Mango lemonade

Pineapple lemonade
