Today, Let’s travel to Manipur, a North eastern state of India. Their Cuisine is similar to South East/ Central East/ Polynesia. We are going to see Alu Kangmet, simple potato dish named .
Manipur Cuisine
Manipur Cuisine mainly use rice, fish and leafy vegetables. The taste is different from other regions of India as they use various aromatic herbs and roots particular to that region.
So you would be thinking why Manipuri suddenly. It’s because, this month challenge from our FB group Shhhh Cooking Secretly Challenge is cuisine from Manipur. Else I wouldn’t have been trying. Glad I’m part of this group as I’m challenging myself to try different cuisine. I have talked about this group and how it works in this post. Likewise this time I’m paired with Aruna, a versatile blogger from India. She blogs a variety of vegetarian dishes in her blog Aahaaram Online. Check her blog to see lip smacking dishes.
Alu Kangmet
This dish needs just 4 basic ingredients. Alu Kangmet is a potato dish made with mashed potato. Alu /Aloo means Potato. When I tried for first time, was doubtful about its taste. But it tasted great with rice.
Let the name not confuse you. Simply this dish is a mashed potato sauteed with red chili. This is usually served with Manipur style Puri. I served with rice. Potato Podimas is a similar type of side dish you can try.
How did I made this
Making this dish is so easy and can be made in a jiffy. Boil and mash potatoes. Saute in oil with crushed dry red chilies and salt. That’s it. So easy right? But don’t suspect the taste. Do try for yourself and thank me later.

Each one is just a tad different from the other, and again from the various aloo pitikas and aloo bhartas, and aloo chokhas that abound in every region of India! This Alu Kangmet with the roasted dried red chilies of the original or the red chilli flakes in your version, sounds one of the best!
