Gulab Jamun is one of the favorite dessert dishes of our family. As Diwali is around the corner, most of the Indian houses would have started preparing sweets and savories. This is one easy method of making Gulab Jamun. Enjoy this Diwali making these delicious Jamuns.
Diwali – an Indian Festival
Diwali is an important festival among Indians. It’s a festival of lights. There are various stories regarding the celebration of this festival, the basic idea is too ‘Good win over the Evil’.

It’s symbolically said by lighting their homes with diyas(small lamps). People make sweets and savories to share with their loved ones. Kids enjoy the most cracking fires. Diwali is incomplete without firecrackers.
Gulab Jamun – An Incredible Dessert
Gulab Jamun can be said as Indian version of the doughnut hole. Small balls made of flour &milk powder are deep-fried and soaked in sugar syrup.
Though during festivals we make lots of varieties of desserts, this dish takes a special place. It’s so easy and versatile dessert that I haven’t seen a person who dislikes it. My son who usually doesn’t have a sweet tooth loves this and he keeps on asking me to make this.
How to make Gulab Jamun
I used store-bought MTR Gulab Jamun Mix to make this dish. It’s so easy to prepare. The first step is to make sugar syrup. The packet says to use 1 kg of sugar with an equal quantity of water to make syrup. But I used 700 gms of sugar with an equal quantity of water. It was perfect for us. You can adjust your sugar level as per your requirements.
Always keep in mind to deep fry in medium flame. If not the inner dough will not be cooked. Soak these jamuns for at least 8 hours. But soaking overnight will give the best results.

MTR Gulab Jamun recipe
INGREDIENTS
MTR Gulab Jamun Mix – 1 Pack (I used 250 gms)
Sugar – 3 cups
Water – 3 cups
Warm Milk – Less than 1/2 cup
Oil – to deep fry
Crushed Cardamom – 1 tsp ( optional)
METHOD
- Start by making sugar syrup. In a Pot take sugar and water.
- Boil it till the sugar dissolves. Add Crushed Cardamom to sugar syrup if adding.
- Switch of the flame. Do not cover the pot as it creates condensation which dilutes the sugar syrup.
- On a wide plate pour the contents out of the MTR mix packet.
- Break any lumps if any. Add milk little by little and combine to a single mass.
- It should not be sticky and dry. If it’s dry add little more milk. If it’s sticky add little more flour.
- Make small balls without cracks from the combined mass of dough. Cover it in a plate or cloth. If not the dough will become dry.
- Heat oil to deep fry in a pan.
- When the oil is hot enough add the balls slowly in batches.
- Cook on medium flame. Turn the jamuns gently using a slotted spoon. Try not to break it.
- When it is dark golden brown remove using a slotted spoon and drop in sugar syrup.
- Repeat till all the jamuns are fried.
- Let it soak for a minimum of 2 hours to overnight.
- Serve.
NOTES
- When adding milk, be careful not to add more. Knead simultaneously while adding milk.
- If the balls are dry just dip your hands in milk and roll the ball again.
- The balls can be sticky a little but not very sticky.
- Don’t forget to cover the balls when waiting for the oil to heat.
- Fry the jamuns in medium flame.
- You can add saffron strands instead of crushed cardamom.
- Instead of milk, you can use water too.
