This is a simple dal dish to have with cooked rice.

Easy dal in a bowl.

Simple Dal

Whatever heavy meals we eat, dal with hot rice and a dollop of ghee can be the most comforting dish in the world. Rich in protein and mild spices can be soothing for your tummy on any given day.

How to make dal

Pressure cook cleaned toor dal along required water to 2 whistles. Add remaining ingredients except salt and pressure cook for another two whistles. After pressure is released, open the lid. Add salt and smash with a ladle. Heat oil/ghee in a pan. Temper all the ingredients under ‘ to temper’ and pour over.

Simple dal recipe

Ingredients

Toor dal – 1/2 cup

Shallots – 6 to 8( chopped roughly)

Tomato – 1 medium-sized chopped

Green chili – 2 slit lengthwise

Garlic – 2 pods

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida – a generous pinch

Salt – as required

To temper

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Jeera – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves – few

Coriander leaves – few

Oil/ ghee – 2 tsp

Method

  • Pressure cook cleaned toor dal along required water to 2 whistles.
  • Add remaining ingredients except salt and pressure cook for another two whistles.
  • After pressure is released, open the lid. Add salt and smash with a ladle.
  • Heat oil/ghee in a pan. Temper all the ingredients under ‘ to temper’ and pour over.
  • Serve warm with cooked rice along with pappads or fryums.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Toor Dal
  • 6 Nos Shallots
  • 1 No Tomato
  • 2 Nos Green Chiliies Slit Lengthwise
  • 2 Nos Garlic Pods
  • 1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Red Chili Powder
  • Asafoetida A Generous Pinch
  • Salt As Required

To Temper

  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Jeera Seeds
  • Curry Leaves Few
  • Cilantro Few
  • 2 Tsp Oil/Ghee

    Dal is always a favorite when going for a curry and this sounds so good and full of flavour. I have a confession, I have asafoetida since a while back but never used it, I will use it and make dal! Happy Fiesta Friday 🙂
