I give you 2 ways of making Sweet Aval/Poha/Flattened Rice Flakes. This is gluten-free and almost no cook dessert or snack.
Aval/Poha
Aval /Poha is nothing but beaten rice flakes. They are both thick and thin varieties. It is called by different names all over India. It is used in both sweet and savory dishes.
How to make Sweet Aval
I made this sweet Aval for Gokulashtami, Janmashtami, or Krishna Jayanthi. It’s the birthday of Lord Krishna celebrated all over India in various ways.Aval/Poha is an important ingredient to present as ‘prasad’.It is one of the favorite things of Lord Krishna.
I made it in two ways
1. Using sugar – which doesn’t need any cooking.
2. Using Jaggery/Palm Sugar – which requires you to make Jaggery syrup.
I used a thin variety of Aval. So just washing will do. Doesn’t need to soak. Then add sugar/Jaggery and coconut. It is a healthy after-school snack for kids. It’s really healthy and yummy. You need just 10 minutes to make this.
Making Jaggery syrup
The Jaggery version starts with making Jaggery syrup. Take jaggery in a pan along with a tbsp of water. Melt it and strain. Jaggery syrup is ready to use for making Sweet Aval.

INGREDIENTS
Aval / Flattened Rice Flakes – 2 cups
Sugar – 1/4 cup (see Notes)
Jaggery – 1/4 cup
Coconut – 1/2 cup Grated(1/4 +1/4)
Raisin – 1 tbsp (optional)
METHOD
- Wash Aval/Flattened Rice flakes and strain water immediately.
- Divide it into two halves.
Using Sugar
- In one part add sugar, half of the grated coconut, and raisins.
- Mix gently.
- Let it sit at least for 30 minutes before serving.

Using Jaggery
- Start with making Jaggery syrup.
- In a pot, take jaggery along with a tbsp of water.
- Heat it in medium flame till jaggery melts and strain.
- Take the strained syrup in another bowl.
- Heat the syrup along with the coconut till thickens.
- Add aval/Flattened Rice Flakes and give a nice stir.
- Switch off.
- Let it sit for at least 30 minutes before serving.

NOTES
- I used a thin variety of aval here. If you use thick variety after washing sprinkle 1 or 2 tbsp of water on aval. Let it soak for 10 minutes. Then follow the steps.
- I used Organic raw sugar. It had large granules. So I powdered it before adding it to aval. If you using fine granule white sugar, you can add it directly.
- Adding raisins is optional. If you want you can add it in the jaggery version too.
