Aloo Paratha / Potato Stuffed Indian Flat Bread is a famous breakfast menu among North Indians. It is a whole wheat flatbread stuffed with mashed potatoes and spices. Now let’s see how to make that famous dish.

Aloo Paratha

Aloo Paratha

First, to confess, I’m a pure South Indian but a hardcore lover of parathas. I would not say this is the authentic way of making Aloo Paratha. This is my way to make and enjoy the paratha. Since my childhood, I have loved rotis and parathas. The same way my daughter loves it. (Happy to pass the gene) There are lots of roti varieties in this space like Carrot ChapathiSpinach ChapathiCilantro Chapathi. To add to that list I made Aloo Paratha. I made this a long time ago but now came the time to publish it. That is because the theme of our FB group Healthy Wellthy Group this time is Parathas.

When I say Aloo Paratha, there are some funny incidents co-related to it. In this year’s vacation, when we went to India, we and our husband’s sister’s family went to Delhi & Agra for a 4-day trip. We thought that getting South Indian food should not be that difficult. But on those 4 days, we were able to find only rotis and parathas. We got some good Aloo Parathas in the hotel we stayed in. For me it was okay, but for them, it was difficult not getting rice, Idli, or dosa.

Finally, at the end of our trip, we found our favorite Saravana Bhavan and had some good Idli, Dosa, and Vada. That was one good, funny trip as none among the ten except me knew Hindi. Our driver knows only Hindi and we couldn’t communicate to him what we want. We finished the trip with my broken Hindi. But at last, everyone was happy to see the beauty of the monuments there.

How to make Aloo Paratha

As I said, this is my version of Aloo Paratha. Made the roti dough as I normally would do with Whole Wheat Flour.  Made the stuffing with boiled potatoes, and some spices. Take an equal-sized ball of dough and the stuffing. Rolled the dough, then stuffed the potato mix. Cover it and roll it. Cook in ghee or butter and smear some butter while it is still hot. Serve along with some thick yogurt or pickle like a true North Indian or with some gravy as I do.

What to serve with Aloo paratha?

You can serve matar paneer, Paneer butter masala, Mushroom masala. Or simply serve them with pickle and yogurt.

Can I make aloo paratha vegan?

Absolutely yes. You can just skip ghee and use vegan butter or oil.

  2. I’m very fond of South Indian cuisine and can eat it everydaybut at the end of day, some North Indian curry, dal or paratha is must. So I can very well understand your family’s condition when you didn’t get South Indian food.
You have perfected the art of making paratha and have presented it beautifully.
