Chettinad Cuisine

Chettinad Cuisine is the most renowned and popular cuisine of Tamil Nadu, South India. It uses a variety of spices and the dishes are made from ground masalas. Most of the dishes are had along with rice or rice-based dishes like Idli/ Dosa, Appam, Paniyaram, Idiyappam/ String hoppers. Chettinad cuisine offers a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The spices mostly used in this cuisine are,

Chettinad Egg Curry

As I said, Chettinad cuisine is spicy and aromatic, however, you can adjust the hotness of the curry by adjusting the chili. I would say that this Egg curry is a simple and easy version. We use fresh ground coconut with the whole spices. The hard-boiled egg is cooked in the ground coconut and masala paste.

How to make Chettinad Egg Curry Recipe

The first step to making this egg curry is to cook hard-boiled eggs. Try my Instant Pot Hard-boiled egg to get perfect, easy-peel hard-boiled eggs every time. Grind coconut with the whole spice to smooth paste. Saute chopped onions and tomato. Add the ground coconut paste along with the required water. Add the cooked eggs and cook till the masala gets coated. Serve this curry with chapati or rice.

Recipe for Egg Curry Chettinad Style

Ingredients

Hard-Boiled Eggs – 4

Onions – ½ Cup sliced

Tomato – 2 chopped

Green Chili – 2 

Cumin seeds – ¼ Tsp

Salt – As required 

Oil – 2 Tbsp

Curry leaves – few

Cilantro – few

To grind

Coconut – ¼  Cup

Coriander powder – 1 ½ Tsp

Chili powder – 1 Tsp

Poppy seeds – ½ Tsp

Fennel Seeds – ½ Tsp

Garlic pods – 4

Cilantro – Few

Method

  • Grind all the ingredients under ‘ to grind’ to smooth paste with the required water.
  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter cumin seeds.
  • Add sliced onions and green chili.
  • Saute till the onions turn golden. 
  • Add the ground coconut paste, and tomato, and add the required water.
  • Add turmeric powder and the required salt.
  • Let it boil for 5 minutes on medium flame.
  • Then add the hard-boiled eggs. You can add it as a whole or half-cut.
  • Let it boil for two minutes and add chopped cilantro.
  • Serve the egg curry with roti, rice, or dosa.

Notes

  1. Adjust the chili powder if you don’t want very spicy.

  • 4 No Garlic pods

  1. Grind all the ingredients under ‘ to grind’ to smooth paste with required water.

  4. I like Chettinad cuisine specially due to the spice level it has in each of its dish. For me egg generally has no taste and adding it to such a flavourful curry will add so much to taste.

  5. I do love a good curry! I fully admit I buy the premade curry because it’s easy. But you also make it look super easy to create my own from scratch. I’ve never heard of adding egg to the curry, so I’ll definitely have to give this a shot
