Kollu or Horse gram is a legume that has a lot of health benefits. It is full of vitamins and proteins. This has been traditionally had during winters to keep the body warm and to cure a cold. It is the best to have in your diet if you are trying to lose weight.

Kollu or Horse gram is had in many ways as Kollu Sundal, Rasam/ Soup, Thuvayal, etc.
How to make Kollu Rasam
The first step to make this rasam is to soak the horse gram overnight. Cook it and drain the water. We are going to use that cooking water to make this rasam. You can use that horse gram to make other dishes. The drained water along with spices and tamarind extract is cooked to make this rasam. Having this on a cold day along with hot rice is heaven. Do try and you will agree with me.

INGREDIENTS
Kollu / Horse gram – 1/4 cup
Tomato – 1 medium-sized chopped
Tamarind – 1 small lemon-sized
Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Black peppercorns – 1/2 tsp
Garlic – 2 pods
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida – a generous pinch
Oil – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – few
Cilantro – few
Salt – as required
METHOD
- Soak the horse gram overnight.
- Wash and cook with 2 cups of water. Strain the water and reserve.
- Soak 1/2 lemon-sized tamarind in 1/2 cup water.
- Pulse jeera, black pepper, and garlic pods coarsely.
- Take a pan and heat the oil.
- Crackle mustard seeds.
- Add the ground spices and saute’ for a minute.
- Then add chopped tomatoes, and curry leaves and saute till it’s mushy.
- Once the tomatoes turn mushy, add the reserved horse gram-cooked water and tamarind extract.
- Add asafoetida and the required salt.
- When it starts to boil add cilantro and switch off.
- Serve warm with hot rice.
NOTES
- Adjust black pepper as per your requirement.

Ingredients
- 1/4 Cup Horse gram
- 1 Tomato Medium Sized Chopped
- Tamarind Small Lemon Sized
- 1/2 Tsp Jeera
- 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper Corns
- 2 Pods Garlic
- 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
- Asafoetida A generous Pinch
- 1 Tsp Oil
- Curry Leaves Few
- Cilantro Few
- Salt As required
Instructions
- Soak horse gram overnight.
- Wash and cook with 2 cups of water. Strain the water and reserve.
