Sweet Pua Pitha is a sweet from West Bengal, an East Indian state. Let us take a detour from South India to East India this time.
West Bengal – An East Indian State
West Bengal, now in India is a separate part of actual Bengal after Indian Independence. It has a high cultural heritage. The state capital Kolkata is known as the ‘cultural capital of India’. As far as the state is known for its heritage, it is also known for its amazing food. Rice and Fish are the main traditional favorite foods for any Bengali. They also have many lip-smacking sweets. Most of their sweets are milk-based such as Rasgulla ( one of my favorite), Sondesh, Payesh, Chum chum, and many more. Durga Pooja is one of the main festivals for them.
Why I made Sweet Pua Pitha
As I have earlier mentioned about the FB group I’m part of Healthy Wellthy Cuisine , making a theme cooking fort night. This time, the theme is Bengali Sweets. That is why I thought of researching about it. I love this fact of being a food blogger which pushes our limits otherwise I will never even give it a try or know about it.
When the theme was decided, I was not sure what to make. I went to look for help from a good blogger friend Sathiskumar of Tastepot. He suggested me a few of the easy sweets and I decided to make this super easy Sweet Pua Pitha.
How to make sweet pua pitha
You need just 4 to 5 basic ingredients. And it’s so easy to make. You don’t need any special equipment. Just mix all the ingredients and deep fry it. It tastes best when it is warm. It is perfect to have on a cozy rainy day. Even I made this on a rainy day and it was awesome. Kids loved it.
The Sweet Pua Pitha is actually made with all-purpose flour. But I used Whole Wheat Flour in place of all-purpose flour. If you don’t mind using all-purpose flour, you can use that. Mix the flour, semolina, sugar, and warm water to make a batter. Pour a ladle of batter into the hot oil. Cook both sides till done. The size of the pitha can be adjusted as you like. I prefer small ones. So I added 3 pitha in oil at the same time. If you like bigger ones, drop one big ladle of batter at a time. It puffs up beautifully making a hollow inside.
